• In patent valuations for sale/purchase of the patents

File Wrapper Analysis

A Patent File Wrapper contains all the documents pertaining to a particular patent application. Patent file wrapper is also referred to as patent file history that has complete documentation of every communication between the inventor (or his attorney) and the patent office. It provides a complete legal record of the patent application including diagrams and drawings, statements made by the applicant, and records of official actions by the Patent Office. The wrapper may also contain records of interviews of the applicant conducted by the Patent Office.
